Mainland or free zone: how to choose your UAE company setup
Most founders setting up in the UAE face the same first decision: mainland or free zone. Both allow full foreign ownership for most activities, so the choice comes down to where and how you plan to do business.
Choose mainland if you sell inside the UAE
A mainland licence lets you trade directly with customers anywhere in the country, open retail locations and bid for government contracts. You will need a physical office with a registered lease, and visa numbers are usually tied to the office size.
Choose a free zone if your customers are mostly abroad or online
Free zones are built for international trading, consulting, e-commerce and holding structures. Packages often include a flexi-desk and a fixed visa quota, which keeps early costs predictable. To sell onshore, a free zone company typically works through a local distributor or an additional permit.
Think about the next three years
Consider the visas you will need, whether you plan to open a shop or warehouse, and whether your clients expect a mainland invoice. Changing jurisdiction later is possible but means a new licence, so it pays to choose carefully now.
